The second commandment appears to cover nearly everything we consider artistic expression.
4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. ~ Exodus 20:4-6
Disobedience with respect to the second commandment produces the same result as disobedience to any other command. It brings a curse, which finds expression through the idolatrous images (idols) that, by their very nature, invite worship. Unless the Lord ordains and directs a work, the only other option available is that another god will direct it. Ultimately, the inspiration for the works of the carnal man's creative expression is unholy spirit, demonic.
When folks design logos and wordmarks for marketing, for personal gain or brand identity or whatever label they want to apply, they are making symbols, usually layered one on another. Since this is forbidden, the action is done in rebellion and the result is going to be a cursed or demonically “charged” object. Copying and distributing it through ads and marketing on products is a brilliant but evil scheme. Symbols, crafted in rebellion, are idols and demonic portals of influence. They work, that’s why they are used.
Some artists seeking the left hand path become masters of the craft, which is also to say they are fully mastered by craft. You can get a formal education in these things, yet others who produce imagery of tangible or virtual kinds in the full range of media are more informally trained from their youth in all things occult, programmed by the shapes, colors, patterns, sequences and combinations that saturate this fallen world, and all are encouraged to bring these expressions forward with passion and skill. This activity produces magickal symbols with real and powerful influence. There's an expression that was popular in the early days of computing that seems applicable here. Garbage In - Garbage Out. There is mimickery involved. We see these patterns all around us, then the ones that really speak to a person are repeated with “personalized” variations. Church and religious art and architecture supports that machinery, and educational institutions that exalt creativity over obedience seem wholly devoted in their programming to honoring the ancient gods in any and every way the culture will accept.
I believe some of the images produced are channeled or drawn by automatic writing or acquired through scrying or copied from a vision. I also think many are simply inspired by the way unholy spirit works in contrast to holy spirit. I believe some are produced through and empowered through dedicated satanic ritual with a purpose in mind. I also believe that many are the natural result of a curse of disobedience.
The prohibition against forming idols is the sovereign Lord's provision for the protection of His people, because, as those who practice sorcery know, “energy” is cast through a symbol. When God ordains design in clothing, building and vessels and such, they model what is in heaven and honor Him. Consider what was given to Moses and the workers in the building of the tabernacle, and to Solomon and the workers in the building of the Temple. The only other option models heaven in a way the fallen angels understood, who leveraged them to honor and exalt the Devil.
